What You Learn in 600 Hours

The science

Anatomy, physiology and kinesiology. You learn what's under your hands, which muscle group refers pain where, and when a client's symptoms mean you should refer them out instead of treating them. It's the half of massage therapy school that separates a technician from a therapist.

The techniques

Swedish, deep tissue, trigger point, stretching and myofascial work. You'll also learn body mechanics for yourself, which is the difference between a 20-year career and a 4-year one. New therapists blow out their thumbs and wrists because nobody taught them to use their body weight.

The business side

Intake and consultation, documentation, ethics and boundaries, and how to build a client base. Plenty of our graduates rent a room and work for themselves inside their first two years. That only works if you know the business half.

How the Program Works

Theory online, hands-on on campus

Lectures and quizzes are available at any time through Hyphen's eLearning platform. You do that work at whatever hour fits. Your campus days are for the table, where you practice technique, body mechanics and client intake with an instructor watching.

Friday evening and weekend campus days

Your hands-on training happens on Friday evening and weekends at the Winter Park campus. That schedule exists for one reason: most of our massage therapy school students work Monday through Friday in Orlando and can't afford to stop working.

Small groups and real practice time

Class sizes stay small. Classes are capped at 10 students. That means you get hands on a body instead of waiting your turn at the back of the room. Your instructors are licensed therapists who still work in the field.

Practice on real clients

Once you're ready, you'll practice on real clients by appointment. Real bodies, real intake forms, real feedback, with someone watching who can correct your pressure and your posture on the spot. It's the closest thing to your first week on the job.

MBLEx preparation

The Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination is built into the program rather than bolted on at the end. You review content areas as you go, so exam prep is something you've been doing for six months by the time you sit down for it.

Accreditation

Hyphen is nationally accredited by COMTA, and our Massage Therapy program holds programmatic accreditation. COMTA reviews massage programs specifically, including supervised clinic work and hands-on competency.

Program Details and Tuition

Your $6,490 covers the full 600 hours, your kit and your massage table. We offer interest-free payment plans, so most students pay $833 a month for 7 months after a $660 deposit rather than financing through an outside lender. Textbooks are purchased separately so that students may choose e-books or find a better price for printed books online.

Your state license and registration fees, MBLEx exam fee and fingerprinting are all included in your tuition.

Getting Licensed in Florida

The Florida Board of Massage Therapy sets the requirements for licensure, and they publish them on their own site. In broad terms, you graduate from a board-approved school, pass the MBLEx, complete the state's required courses, clear a background screening and file your application with the Board. That path is the same whichever Orlando school you attend.

Our campus faces I-4 at the Lee Road exit, which makes it a straight shot for students along the whole corridor. We have massage students driving in from Winter Park, Altamonte Springs, Four Corners, Kissimmee, Sanford, Apopka and Oviedo.

Friday evening and weekend classes help here too. You're not fighting the I-4 weekday crawl to get to a 9am class. And the resort corridor those students drive through is also where a lot of them end up working, alongside the day spas, chiropractic offices and physical therapy practices spread across Central Florida.

What Happens After You Graduate

Career services

Every student gets career services at no extra cost. We work with salons, spas and major employers across Orlando. We also teach business classes for graduates who'd rather build their own practice than join someone else's. Hyphen offers all graduates ten free sessions using its service rooms and equipment under Hyphen's salon license, helping them start their own salon or spa rent-free.
